Does your existing stucco finish look worn, tired, or dated? If it does, your home may benefit from re-stuccoing. Re-stuccoing involves incorporating the existing stucco surface, making any necessary repairs to the stucco substrate, and applying new stucco to create your beautiful new stucco finish. Home re-stucco is one of the most common stucco tasks requested by San Diego homeowners and the stucco specialists at Nurse Stucco are re-stucco experts with over 35 years experience.

A complete re-stucco of a house or building is the best way to address not only problems of deterioration, but also of cosmetics. The advantage to a complete re-stucco is that the preparation and repair work is sealed under a color coat that allows for a more solid finished product without the look of a patch job.

The key to a successful and longer lasting re-stucco lies in the preparation and repair work. The better the procedure taken to repair and restore the structure or dwelling, the longer the finished product will last. The knowledge gained over the past 3 decades by those at Nurse Stucco will insure that the best procedures and products will be used to renovate prior to re-stuccoing.

The color coat process of a re-stucco can be accomplished with a cement based stucco or an acrylic stucco. Both products are very good and long lasting dependent upon the integrity of the preparation and repair work.

Cement based color coats are the most commonly used exterior finish products. Expo stucco is the major supplier of color stucco products in the San Diego area. Their colors are all of an earthen base and pre-mixed into each bag of stucco. Colored cement based stucco is designed to be applied over any cement substrate following proper preparation procedures.

Acrylic color coats are not cement based products, therefore, extra preparation procedures have to be taken to make this product compatible with all cement and stucco surfaces. While in many instances an acrylic finish coat can be a bit longer lasting than cement stucco, the product can also be problematic for certain jobs. Selecting the best re-stucco products to meet your specific re-stucco needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all re-stucco solution is a service that we provide to all Nurse Stucco customers.

What’s Involved in Re-coat and Re-Stucco?

How you approach a re-stucco project really depends largely on the existing exterior finish and what preparations are needed to establish a uniform substrate or ‘base”. Stucco is ONLY as strong as it’s substrate so any weakness or inconsistencies in the base will cause problems with the finish color coat. This is especially true when re-stuccoing over hand applied smooth stucco.

Your home re-stucco projects start with a careful evaluation of the wall surfaces to identify any areas needing repairs. Next we sandblast to clean and prepare the surface for the new stucco coat, removing about 1/8″ of the surface, and make any necessary repairs. Then we apply a thin coat of stucco called a brown coat (this would be step #2 in a 3-coat stucco application) to level out the surface of the the walls. This leveling coat will cover any inconsistencies in the finish it’s covering, and it gives the walls a smooth texture for the final color coat. The finish (color coat) is thin, and gives your home it’s unique stucco texture and color.
